Doshas & Yogas
Do I Have Manglik Yoga (Kuja Dosha)?
In Indian astrology, Manglik Dosha (also called Mangal or Kuja Dosha) is formed when Mars is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of the birth chart. It is taken very seriously in marriage matching – but it is far less common, and far more often cancelled, than most people think.
Why Manglik Dosha Matters
Manglik Dosha is considered inauspicious for marriage. It is traditionally believed to cause conflict, delays or unhappiness in married life, and in severe cases separation. When two Manglik people marry, the effect is believed to be reduced or cancelled, so such a union is often recommended.
Placement Alone Is Not Enough
By the basic rule, almost half of all people would be Manglik – and half of all marriages would fail, which is clearly not the case. The placement of Mars is only the starting point. Its strength must also be judged: only when Mars is very strong in these houses (roughly above 55% strength, which is rare) does the dosha seriously damage a marriage.
Mars in these houses can even form a Mangal Yoga, the opposite of the dosha. When Mars is well placed and beneficial, it makes marriage successful, prosperous, happy and timely.
When Manglik Dosha Is Cancelled
The dosha is cancelled, or never forms, in many situations:
- Mars is in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio), its exaltation sign (Capricorn), or the sign of a friendly planet (the Sun, Moon or Jupiter).
- Mars is in the 2nd house in Gemini or Virgo.
- Mars is in the 12th house in Taurus or Libra.
- Mars is in the 8th house in Sagittarius or Pisces.
- The Ascendant is Cancer or Leo – Mars is then a beneficial planet, and its placement anywhere does not form the dosha.
- The Ascendant is Aquarius and Mars is in the 4th or 8th house.
- Jupiter or Venus is placed in the Ascendant.
- Mars is conjunct Jupiter or the Moon.
- Mars is conjunct the Sun, Mercury, Saturn or Rahu.
So readings about Manglik Dosha need care. The basic definition is easy to apply, but the full chart decides whether the dosha is real, cancelled, never formed, or even the auspicious Mangal Yoga.
